OXNARD, Calif. – Rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant could begin rehabilitation work on his injured right ankle today.

On schedule, Bryant had a walking boot removed from the ankle Friday. He had worn the boot for two weeks after incurring a high sprain to the ankle near the end of a practice at San Antonio's Alamodome.

The removal of the boot is considered a major step in the recovery process. Based on original projections, Bryant will need two to four weeks of rehabilitation work before returning to the field. That makes it unlikely Bryant will appear during the exhibition season, but he could be available for the season opener at Washington on Sept. 12.

Bryant has been with the team since the injury and participated in all receivers study sessions. He has also stayed close to receivers coach Ray Sherman during practice and fielded questions from him as to his assignment on the play that had been called.

"You can tell he's coming along," veteran receiver Miles Austin said. "He's definitely focused on the offense now, picking up the small things. ... Once he gets back, he'll know a lot of the offense."
