Big (and bad) news out of Denver: multiple media outlets are reporting that Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas has torn his Achilles. The injury occurred during a workout in Georgia. (Thomas is from Montrose, GA and attended Georgia Tech.)

Supple athleticism and raw strength made Thomas the team’s first-round draft choice this past year. Injuries limited him to just 10 games (2 starts) in 2010, and he finished with 22 receptions for 283 yards on the season. However, Thomas’ raw talent was noticeable.

At the pro level, Thomas is more of a methodical possession type receiver than speed demon. But an Achilles injury is difficult to overcome no matter what your style of play. If Thomas does play in 2011, it might not be until after the leaves fall off the trees.

At some point, receiving depth becomes a question for the Broncos. Another young wideout, Eddie Royal, already had hip surgery earlier this month. Royal is facing at least five months of rehab.
