Danny McCray back with Cowboys

Updated: April 19, 2013, 4:46 PM ET
By Calvin Watkins

The Dallas Cowboys, who have depth problems at the safety position, signed restricted free agent Danny McCray on Friday.

McCray, who started 10 games for Dallas last season, finished second on the team with a career-high 87 tackles.

Barry Church is penciled in as the starter, but he's coming off a torn Achilles injury. The Cowboys also recently signed veteran Will Allen and Matt Johnson, who missed his entire rookie season with a hamstring injury.

McCray was one of the Cowboys' better special teams players, finishing second on the team with 18 tackles.

Dallas has the 18th overall pick in the draft.

Special teamer yes.

Safety no. Already failed that audition miserably.

Sometimes it's best to leave the trash by the curb.

Good teams, and teams ran by a competant FO, do not keep players like McCray on their roster.

He is an excellent special teamer. Of course good teams keep guys like him.

Tat is a silly statement. Every good team has a special teams ace.

Ever heard of bill bates or Kenny gant?

He's just a special teamer.

The team needs to make sure they don't get in the situation where he has to be a starter.

I don't think Ware's elbow or Claiborne's head could handle McCray being on the field.

Both of these players was capable of playing defense. Danny sucks at the safety position. It is stupid to waste a roster spot on a player that can't play offense or defense. By the way, he couldn't carry Bates or Gants jock strap when it comes to playing special teams. Guys like him are a dime a dozen.

He can be the new Allan Ball, who was the new Lynn Scott.

The shitty player they adopt to help him get to his pension year, then move on.

To compare him to the likes of Bates or Gant is stupid. He is a good ST player that can't do shit else. It's a stupid signing.

Ok.

I am comparing the contributions on special teams. Leaders, good players.

Gant had no position btw, he couldn't play anywhere but st. Irvin even busted his balls about it on the America's team 92 edition. Always dancing. Great special teamer.

If u wanted to compare him to a recent player it would be Keith Davis, great special teamer, looked slow and sloppy at safety.

Bill bates was great. I was only comparing his st play.

McCray is a good special teamer. I am glad he is back. When he played the old 40 lb spot in the dime last year he actually showed what a good tackler he was, he just can't cover....just like Keith Davis.

McCray is the type of player that prevents the team from deveoping quality depth. He is doing nothing.more than taking up a roster space. One point that needs to be brought up is that the soecial teams was horrible last year. It was so bad that Jerry let Joe D go to the Bears. This special teams ace with great leadership skills was a big part of the mess. Exactly what did he do that was so great last year? Before him it was Hurd. At least Hurd could play a regular position and keep the team high. You are giving McCray too much credit for his defensive play. The team would have been better to keep Frampton. Please give me some stats or something to support his special teams play. I don't remember him causing turnovers or even standing out with tackles while he was filling the role of special teams ace.

I didn't give him any credit for his defensive play, he looked pretty good in that 40 role when the team was healthy. In 11 he was looking pretty good as a blitzer and tackler. He had that big sack against the jets forced fumble.

Joe d was not fired, he was not let go because of the st stats if u will. He wanted out after the 11 season and they blocked him from leaving. The special teams were excellent down the stretch last year after Harris took over and McCray went back to just doing that while safety was played by, Carr, frampton and peprah.

He is blocking no one from developing. No one. He is the 4th or 5th safety. He is an excellent special teams player. That is his role, special teamer and emergency, utility safety.

didn't mccray take out one of our own players?

he seems like he's struggling to be average.

I suspect the reason why Danny has an invite to camp is because the team projects him as the captain and leader of the special teams.

JMO.

He's clearly not there for his safety play.

Possibly he has been identified as the guy who keeps special teams organized on the field and understand the calls from the ST coach.

Not a fan of giving him 1.3 mil... but he's a helluva special teamer when he's allowed to focus on that.

He's replaceable. Easily replaceable good teams don't just resign guys like McCray they go out and find better guys. The dudes a jag. The Cowboys FO doesn't know how to find real talent or evaluate talent; so they just keep what they are comfortable with.

You make a good point with the key word being comfortable. Jerry is like many fans, he is scared of the unknown. I think he gets comfortable with players and doesn't look for upgrades. He considers the position filled until something happens to make him look for a replacement.

WTF?

McCray is a really good special team player. he might suck as a starter in the secondary (something he would have never done if not for injuries) but the guy has a valuable role.

And he might get beat out and released, just because he's signed to a 1yr deal today doesn't guarantee him a roster spot.
