Things you can count on: Tony Romo to Jason Witten
Todd Archer
ESPN Staff Writer

There are certain things you can expect from the Dallas Cowboys.

Jerry Jones will make headlines. Jason Garrett will talk about the process. And Tony Romo will find Jason Witten.

Of Witten’s 1,020 catches, 649 of them have come from Romo for 7,287 yards.

In Friday’s 41-14 preseason win against the Miami Dolphins, Romo and Witten were on the field together for just 13 snaps, but they managed to connect twice for 24 yards.

“Jason is the best at what he does,” Romo said. “You just find him sometimes, and things look pretty easy. We just have to keep improving and getting better. We are still on camp mode.”

Camp mode seemed good enough against the Dolphins.

Witten’s first reception came out of a three-wide receiver sit in which the 10-time Pro Bowl tight end sat in zone coverage and picked up 12 yards for a first down. His last catch came in an empty formation with Romo throwing a strong pass in the middle of the field to Witten’s right shoulder and away from Miami linebacker Jelani Jenkins for another first down.

On the next play Alfred Morris scored on a 15-yard run.

Given that Romo started and finished two games last season because of a twice-broken left collarbone, the connection with Witten did not fade.

“We put a lot of work into it,” Witten said. “It isn’t the first time we’ve come back. We put in a full offseason; then a training camp; then come back out here. It was good to get some first downs going.”
