The Cowboys will go with Robert Brewster as the starting right tackle in Saturday's preseason game at San Diego in Marc Colombo's absence.

Colombo had surgery on Monday and will miss 2-4 weeks in his recovery.

Brewster took the first-team reps on Monday after Sam Young finished the practice with the No. 1 offense on Sunday after Colombo went out. Wade Phillips said Doug Free will remain on the left side and that once Alex Barron recovers from a sprained ankle that Barron could move to the right side if needed.

"I think we're fine right there right now," Phillips said.

Leonard Davis does not expect Colombo to miss much time. He came back from a fractured fibula and high ankle sprain in seven weeks last year.

"Who knows with him?" Davis said. "I mean he may be back in two weeks."

Davis said Brewster did fine on Monday. Brewster did not play as a rookie because of a torn pectoral muscle and has spent his time at left tackle in Barron's absence until today.

"It's all just communication," Davis said. "That's all it is ... It takes a little whole, not like a whole year. It probably took like a week or so [last year] with Doug and I and we were fine."
