Mark Herzlich Signs With Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Mark Herzlich, the Boston College linebacker who survived cancer, has signed with the New York Giants as a free agent.

Herzlich announced his decision Tuesday morning in a tweet.

"Decision is made," he tweeted, adding that he's happy to be a Giant and can't wait to get to New York.

Herzlich was chosen ACC defensive player of the year after his sophomore season. He was diagnosed with bone cancer and missed the 2009 season. He returned in 2010 for the Eagles and started all 13 games. He had 65 tackles, forced two fumbles and intercepted four passes.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin is a former Boston College coach.

Mike Bell and Jerome Harrison switched teams in a trade last year. Now the two running backs will be teammates on the Detroit Lions.

In 2010, the Philadelphia Eagles traded Bell to the Cleveland Browns for Harrison. On Tuesday, Detroit signed the pair and filled a huge void in the backfield created by Monday's season-ending injury to rookie Mikel Leshoure.

Leshoure tore his left Achilles tendon Monday, ending his season before it began.

The 2011 second-round pick was injured after being hit high, quickly and cleanly, by defensive end Cliff Avril during an 11-on-11 drill in practice.

The Lions immediately began looking into bolstering their backfield, especially with Maurice Morris out with a broken right hand.

Harrison's best season was in 2009 when he rushed for a career-best 862 yards and five touchdowns for the Browns. He also had 34 receptions and two touchdown catches. Last year, he averaged a gaudy 6 yards per carry after his trade to the Eagles and scored one rushing touchdown.

Bell's best season came in his rookie year with the Denver Broncos in 2006 when he rushed for 677 yards and eight touchdowns. He also had 654 yards and five touchdowns for the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in 2009. He had a non-descript 2010 season, getting minimal carries as Peyton Hillis' backup after the trade from Philadelphia.

To make room for Harrison and Bell, the Lions released fullback Preston Dial and waived injured cornerback Maurice Leggett.
