Bernadeau injury could open door
May, 16, 2012

Mackenzy Bernadeau underwent hip surgery over the weekend and will be out for as long as 12 weeks. He will most likely miss the entire offseason work at Valley Ranch including the veteran minicamp in June.

He could even miss the first week of training camp and return in August.

You can take this as a major blow to a team that just signed Bernadeau to a four-year $11 million deal in free agency or one where it gives other players a chance to get some reps with the first-team offense.

The Cowboys have depth in the interior of the line with David Arkin, Bill Nagy, Kevin Kowalski and Ronald Leary.

Arkin wasn't active for any games last season as a rookie, getting a redshirt if you will. Nagy started three games before his season ended with a broken ankle.

The coaches like Kowalski's toughness and his ability to play center. Leary can play both guard spots and despite a chronic knee problem, had a mid-round draft grade on some NFL teams' boards.

Of course the Cowboys have Nate Livings, whom they signed in free agency along with Bernadeau. Livings said he can play left and right guard, which is a positive thing for a team that wants versatility with its linemen.

While yes, Bernandeau's loss should concern you a little, but there are others waiting to get some work over the summer and the early stages of training camp that helps with the overall development of the team.

And to say Bernadeau's injury could lead to more things is unfair. He was listed just once on the injury report last season with Carolina and that was in Week 1.

Bernadeau should be ready to go at some point in 2012, until that time, there is depth on the roster which is good.

Just curious, what's the source of the article?... Because that's some rose-colored glasses to look at this as

Because this isn't a good thing. Pretty much sucks.

Um, how did he get injured?

Not sure but it sounds like Jerry signed damaged goods..

According to multiple sources, Bernadeau, who signed a four-year, $11 million deal as a free agent in March, had surgery over the weekend to repair a tear in his right hip and the hope is he could be back in 10-12 weeks.

Bernadeau's agent, Dennis Boyev, declined comment.

Bernadeau has missed most of the offseason conditioning program while doing rehab for his hip.

Makes sense why Carolina was so eager to let him go in the first place. In addition to sucking ass, he was also injured.

Great, excellent diligence and research to know the facts before signing him...

That's the way our GM rolls.

I like how we are all counting on Ron Leary.

No other team or fanbase puts so much expectations on Rookie Free Agents or 7th round draft picks in their rookie years.

I'm not saying they can't develop down the road but to count on an UDFA or late (6th/7th rounders) to show up and immediately be "factors'" for us is a tad unrealistic.

I wouldn't exactly refer to that as "depth."

Warm bodies seems more appropriate.

He'll be labeled as a bust before he even has a chance to develop here.

Between the cowboy way and stacking practices, it doesn't seem like they had enough time to teach roster development basics at Nick Saban's 3rd String QB to NFL Head Coach Transition School.
