It’s still unclear if Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will be able to play in the team’s season opener. If he can’t go, John Phillips will be in the starting lineup. Even if doctors determine Witten’s lacerated spleen has healed, it’s likely Phillips will play often.
Phillips, a sixth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2009, started in Saturday’s preseason game and was targeted three times by Tony Romo on the team’s opening drive.
The Virginia native caught one pass for 10 yards, appeared to catch another that was later overruled by a challenge and was called for a questionable offensive pass interference on the third.
“I thought I did all right,” Phillips said Monday. “I did good to get out there with the first O and I think our first three drives we scored points, so ultimately that’s what our offense needs to do.”
Phillips said it was a little different getting so many reps with the first team, but added that he’s “absolutely” ready if Witten can’t go against the New York Giants on Sept. 5.
“You’ve got to be ready to go,” Phillips said. “Step in. Next man up mentality. Ready to get out there and go.”
Regardless of Witten’s status, Martellus Bennett’s departure means Phillips, who isn’t expected to play in the preseason finale Wednesday night, will have a bigger role this season. Through three preseason games, Phillips has four catches for
“You always think you’re going to have a major role every game your entire career,” Phillips said. “Somebody can get hurt. It happened to me one play. Two years ago in that preseason game. You’re a knee injury away or a rolled ankle away from playing the whole game.
“So that’s the way you’ve got to prepare, go in every week thinking you’re going to play 70 reps.”
Phillips, who had 15 receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown last season, missed the entire 2010 season with a torn ACL. He missed the first two preseason games this year with an ankle injury.
