I'd sit him. I think we would be fine for this one game without him, even if it were the Giants. If we were to lsoe to the Giants, I don't think it would be because we were without Witten. Bring him back for the Seahawks.

Witten tends to have big games against the Giants. We need him. Up to the doctors, if they say he is ok to go. It’s Witten vs Bennett Bowl I.

If Witten doesn't play then Hostile won't get to update his stats after the game.

Source: Jason Witten A Game-Time Decision For Season Opener Vs. Giants
by One.Cool.Customer

Jason Witten had a doctor's appointment yesterday to determine the status of his injured spleen. Josh Ellis of dallascowboys.com writes today that a source familiar with Witten's progress indicated Witten "will be a game-time decision for next week’s NFL Kickoff game at New York."

That's great news for Cowboys fans, and bad news for Giants supporters, but is three weeks really enough time for a lacerated spleen to heal sufficiently? Witten sustained the injury on August 13, so expecting a full recovery by September 5 does seem awfully fast. Stephen Jones was predictably a little more circumspect in his assessment of Witten's chances to play in the season opener:

"I don’t think we’ve determined that yet," Jones said. "It’s something that is ongoing."
Stephen Jones did rule out that Jason Witten would require surgery, but pointed out that Witten would have a follow-up appointment next week that would provide further clarity on his status for the Giants game. In the meantime though, Witten's 'idle' time looks to be over, starting tomorrow:

"(Witten) will do some good work on the field in the next few days," Jones said. "No contact, but work to max-out his body."
Regardless of whether he'll end up playing next Wednesday or not, the good news is that Witten appears to be recovering faster than initially anticipated, when his recovery time was set at between four and six weeks.

Cowboys TE John Phillips ‘absolutely’ ready to start if Jason Witten can’t play
By Jon Machota / Special Contributor
5:44 pm on August 29, 2012

It’s still unclear if Cowboys tight end Jason Witten will be able to play in the team’s season opener. If he can’t go, John Phillips will be in the starting lineup. Even if doctors determine Witten’s lacerated spleen has healed, it’s likely Phillips will play often.

Phillips, a sixth-round pick by the Cowboys in 2009, started in Saturday’s preseason game and was targeted three times by Tony Romo on the team’s opening drive.

The Virginia native caught one pass for 10 yards, appeared to catch another that was later overruled by a challenge and was called for a questionable offensive pass interference on the third.

“I thought I did all right,” Phillips said Monday. “I did good to get out there with the first O and I think our first three drives we scored points, so ultimately that’s what our offense needs to do.”

Phillips said it was a little different getting so many reps with the first team, but added that he’s “absolutely” ready if Witten can’t go against the New York Giants on Sept. 5.

“You’ve got to be ready to go,” Phillips said. “Step in. Next man up mentality. Ready to get out there and go.”

Regardless of Witten’s status, Martellus Bennett’s departure means Phillips, who isn’t expected to play in the preseason finale Wednesday night, will have a bigger role this season. Through three preseason games, Phillips has four catches for

“You always think you’re going to have a major role every game your entire career,” Phillips said. “Somebody can get hurt. It happened to me one play. Two years ago in that preseason game. You’re a knee injury away or a rolled ankle away from playing the whole game.

“So that’s the way you’ve got to prepare, go in every week thinking you’re going to play 70 reps.”

Phillips, who had 15 receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown last season, missed the entire 2010 season with a torn ACL. He missed the first two preseason games this year with an ankle injury.
