Cowboys defense has work to do after allowing 90- and 88-yard drives
Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan got a haircut sometime between Friday afternoon and game time. His unit likely had him pulling out his hair afterward.
It was a frustrating afternoon for the Cowboys defense, which had drawn praise for its season-opening performance against the Giants. New York had gained only 269 yards against them in the season opener.
The Seahawks gained 315 yards, running the ball so effectively with Marshawn Lynch that they didn’t give the Cowboys a chance to tee off on their rookie quarterback. Russell Wilson threw only 20 passes, completing 15, while the Seahawks ran for 182 yards on 41 carries, including 122 on 26 carries by Lynch.
“It comes down to tackling,” Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware said. “[Lynch] is a big back, but we have to tackle better. We will have tackle drills this week to refresh our memory how to do it.”
The Dallas defense forced no turnovers, had four penalties for 42 yards, sacked Wilson only twice, allowed five third-down conversions and gave up second-half touchdown drives of 90 and 88 yards.
“If we continue to let that happen, we won’t be a very good defense,” Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee said. “…I think we were taking steps forward. This is obviously a step back. But finding a way to learn from it and move on is the only way we’re going to be the consistent defense that we’re looking for.”
But Dallas defenders took exception to questions about Seattle being “more physical.”
“Ain’t nobody getting knocked off the ball. Ain’t no downhill,” Cowboys defensive end Jason Hatcher said. “It was just one of those things. They were up. They were able to keep doing what they were doing. They were able to stick with the run. It would be different if the score would have been close, …but they were able to stay with the run. There was nobody getting knocked off the ball. If you watch the game, you will see nobody getting knocked off the ball. It would take a hell of a person to knock us off the ball.”
