Baylor receiver Terrance Williams strolled through Valley Ranch, taking time to stop and see the pictures. Of Drew Pearson and Michael Irvin and Miles Austin and Dez Bryant....
Williams, a Dallas native who graduated from W.T. White, would love to have the chance to be the next receiver in a long line of great Cowboys receivers, a list that includes Hall of Famer Bob Hayes. The Cowboys are the team, of course, that Williams grew up rooting for.
The most impressive part of his Tuesday visit to Valley Ranch, though, was meeting Jerry Jones.
"it was more than I had kind of expected," Williams said. "Growing up, I was a huge Cowboys fan, so seeing him and talking to him was better than what I thought it would be. He is straight forward and to the point. He's the type of person you want to play for. That's the kind of feeling I had when I was meeting with him."
The Cowboys have had a handful of receivers in for visits among the 30 they have for national prospects. Clemson's DeAndre Hopkins, TCU's Josh Boyce and Oregon State's Markus Wheaton are among those who have been to Valley Ranch.
The Cowboys lost Kevin Ogletree, their third-leading wideout last season, in free agency. They like the way Dwayne Harris stepped up late last season in finishing with 17 catches for 222 yards and a touchdown, and they like the potential of Cole Beasley, an undrafted rookie who had 15 catches for 128 yards. But it wouldn't be surprising if the Cowboys spent one of their six choices on a wideout.
Williams, projected as a second-rounder, caught 97 passes for a nation-leading 1,832 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior last season. He ran a 4.48 at the combine, but he said teams are not concerned about his speed. Williams said the Cowboys told him they had hand-held times of 4.44 and 4.47 for him in Indianapolis.
Williams has shown he can create separation, with 34 catches of at least 20 yards and 16 that went at least 30.
The hardest part of the draft process is now. Williams can't do anything except wait, while some draft analysts pick his game apart. All he can do is enjoy the ride, getting the opportunity to meet coaches and players he has watched on TV for so many years.
"It's been fun," Williams said. "This is only going to happen once. It'll never happen again. So I'm just taking it one day at a time."
