IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys enter the second day of the NFL draft with just one pick because they gave up their second-round pick to St. Louis as part of a package to get Morris Claiborne, the cornerback from LSU, with the sixth overall pick.
The Cowboys have a third-round pick, the 81st overall.
What happens today?: The Cowboys will have an early afternoon news conference introducing Claiborne. After that, the front office will hunker down again and try to gain a second rounder and figure out what to do with the third-round pick.
Key Targets: TE DeAngelo Peterson, LSU, TE Ladarius Green, UL-Lafayette, TE Orson Charles, Georgia, G Amini Silatolu, Midwestern State, G Brandon Brooks, Miami of Ohio, WR Ryan Broyles and WR Marquis Maze, Alabama.
Quick note about Round 1: The Cowboys were the only team to not draft a defensive back in the first three rounds from 2009-2011. Last time they drafted a defensive back prior to Thursday night was Mike Jenkins in the first round in 2008.
Can they get an extra pick?: Considering what it took to move up in the draft, the Cowboys feel pretty good about themselves today regarding their draft picks. Under some draft charts, the Cowboys might have given up a fourth-round pick in addition to a second rounder to move from 14 to 6. Instead, Dallas lost just one pick, a second rounder. Trading Mike Jenkins, coming off shoulder surgery and playing in the last year of his contract, won't get the second-round pick back. Maybe a package with one of their fourth-rounders -- they have two at 113 overall and a compensatory selection at 135, might get them back in. Scouts love draft picks because it builds depth on the roster and when you lose one it hurts. But to get an elite corner that's what the Cowboys had to do Thursday night.
