Cowboys practice report: Day 6
July, 29, 2010

By Calvin Watkins

SAN ANTONIO -- After consecutive two-a-days, the Cowboys went to just a single practice on Thursday afternoon. The team made two roster moves, adding defensive tackle Jimmy Saddler-McQueen and cornerback Teddy Williams. Kicker Delbert Alvarado and defensive lineman Lorenzo Washington were released.

The referees made an appearance at camp and will talk to the team about new rule changes and where the umpire will line up this year. Now on to what's happening.

*Safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (shoulder), linebacker Sean Lee (quad), linebacker Stephen Hodge (knee), defensive tackle Sean Lissemore (groin), nose tackle Josh Brent (hand), defensive end Jason Hatcher (elbow), safety Pat Watkins (knee) and tight end Martellus Bennett (ankle) missed practice.

*Kicker David Buehler went six-for-six on field goals. He hooked one inside the goal post and pushed another through to the right. His makes were from 22, 28, 27, 30, 23 and 23 yards. The officials stood under the goal post and signaled if they were made.

*Dez Bryant makes an amazing catch almost every day. This time while running a route toward the sidelines, Bryant just stuck his left hand out to make the catch before landing both feet in bounds. Two scouts on the sidelines were watching and shook their heads in awe.

*The offensive line had some issues. There were false starts by guard Pat McQuistan and tackle Robert Brewster. After McQuistan's mistake, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said, "Give me another right guard." Phil Costa came in for McQuistan, and Sam Young replaced Brewster. Left tackle Doug Free also had a false start as DeMarcus Ware was preparing to rush. Alex Barron came in for Free. Guard Montrae Holland also had a false start and was replaced by McQuistan.

*Despite the false starts, the line did a nice job of opening holes for running back Marion Barber, who continues to run with speed. He's lighter, about 215 pounds, and is easily showing everybody his burst when he gets to a hole. But there are times when Barber gets stopped. Inside linebacker Bradie James stood up Barber on one run play.

*Two things you notice down here is the secondary and Bryant. Thursday, cornerback Bryan McCann jumped the route and knocked down a pass for Manuel Johnson. On an incomplete pass from Tony Romo to Roy E. Williams, Orlando Scandrick and Mike Hamlin had tight coverage on him. Cletis Gordon continues to have a strong camp. He knocked a ball away from Bryant, and Mike Jenkins also broke up a pass for Miles Austin. The ball was basically in Austin's hands when Jenkins poked it out.

*The Cowboys worked on their red-zone offense and defense, and the defense won things. Romo didn't find anything in the end zone and had to settle for completions underneath. He did find Felix Jones for a touchdown pass, but he threw a pass into the ground as Jason Witten stood open in the back of the end zone. Stephen McGee's first pass was a touchdown to fullback Chris Gronkowski.
