Cowboys practice report: Day 2, Pt. I
July, 25, 2010

By Calvin Watkins

SAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys began the first of seven two-a-day practices at the Alamodome on Sunday. Here's our report from the morning practice:

*The Cowboys were in pads for the morning practice.

*Linebacker Keith Brooking (recovering from knee surgery) missed the morning session and should return in the afternoon. Tight end Martellus Bennett (ankle), defensive end Lorenzo Washington (hamstring), cornerback Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (shoulder) will continue to miss practices until they fully recover from their injuries. "I should be back next week," Bennett said after practice.

*Wide receiver Kevin Ogletree tweaked his right ankle after catching a pass but was OK and conducted practice without any further problems.

*Cletis Gordon, competing for the fourth cornerback spot, was lined up with Orlando Scandrick on the second-team defense. With Brooking out, Jason Williams and Sean Lee shared first-team reps with Bradie James at inside linebacker. In a three-receiver set, Miles Austin was in the slot as Dez Bryant and Roy Williams lined up outside.

*The best play of the practice came when Bryant caught a low ball from Jon Kitna. What made the play so special was Mike Jenkins was drapped all over Bryant, who was almost on his back when he caught the ball.

*Tony Romo had a much better practice Sunday morning then he did Saturday. Some of his Saturday throws were long or short. But on Sunday he connected much better on his throws -- although he badly underthrew a ball to Williams -- and was good at stepping up in the pocket when the pressure got close. Romo did a nice job in finding Patrick Crayton on a comeback route near the sidelines, and he made a perfect pass over Scandrick's helmet to complete a pass to Williams.

*The secondary didn't make as many plays on the ball Sunday, but DeMarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer, Curtis Johnson and Jay Ratliff were active in getting pressure on the quarterback. On a Ware sack, Spencer blocked the running back into the backfield.

*Jamar Wall, Bryan McCann, Titus Ryan and Bryant worked on punt returns. Guard Kyle Kosier practiced some snaps with quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson.

*Larry Lacewell, a former Cowboys director of pro and college scouting, was in attendance, as was former Cowboys Pro Bowl guard and ESPN 103.3 personality Nate Newton.
