SAN ANTONIO -- The Cowboys finished their last two-a-day practice here in the Alamodome and got some bad news on the tail end of it.

*Starting defensive end Marcus Spears left practice with about 20 minutes left with an apparent leg injury. Spears limped off the field and went straight to the locker room. Backup tackle Alex Barron suffered a dislocated left pinky finger. The playing status of both players for Sunday's preseason opener vs. the Bengals is in question.

*Before Spears and Barron were taken off, Montrae Holland (hamstring), Dez Bryant (knee), Pat Watkins (knee), Keith Brooking (rest), Stephen Hodge (knee), Brandon Williams (knee) and Sean Lissemore (groin) missed the afternoon session.

*Nose tackle Josh Brent had a good practice. He showed good penetration on two run plays, beating Andre Gurode. Brent is doing this with a cast on his left hand that looks more like a club. The key for Brent is his ability to grab offensive linemen and would be ball carriers. If he can do that on a consistent basis, he's got a good chance of making the team.

*Orlando Scandrick made a nice play off a deflected pass. Jesse Holley couldn't hold onto the ball and Scandrick grabbed it in the air and ran for what would have been a touchdown.

*Jason Williams has struggled in pass coverage but on a pass to Marion Barber in the flat, Williams was with the running back, stride-for-stride. We're not saying he's going to be an All Pro, but that is a little progress.
