Watkins: Clifton Geathers is getting his chance

Clifton Geathers is getting his chance

OXNARD, Calif. -- When Clifton Geathers says he's making the most of his opportunities, he means it. Just look at the places he's been.

The defensive end has been with four teams -- Cleveland, Miami, Seattle and Dallas -- since he was selected in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL draft.

"Every play you have on the field, you got to think, 'Hey, this has to be my best play ever, whether I'm going to be here or not," Geathers said. "I just got to give it my all. It's never about thinking if you're going to get cut, because I've been cut before and that’s what I have in the back of my mind. Now that I'm not thinking (about) worrying about being cut, now I have to give it my best and try and give it my best shot every single play I'm out there."

Patience was the key for Geathers, who was claimed by the Cowboys in December 2010 but didn't play any games that season.

He played in five games last season, getting two tackles and three quarterback pressures.

Getting more playing time was tough for Geathers because he was behind several players.

His size (6-7, 325 pounds) and his quickness are an attractive package for the Cowboys' defensive coaches to keep around. In three days of training camp, Geathers has been a force, getting two sacks and a few pass breakups Wednesday.

"It's always hard to wait," Geathers said. "But with the guys we have on the D-line, they help you along with the coaches. Then we have Leon Lett and everybody. I need all the help that I can get. It's probably good that I waited, because I learned a whole lot more."

Getting cut by three teams in a 2 year period = making the most out of opportunities?

If he's getting it figured out, he could be a nice role player here for us. Sounds like he's been off to a great start in camp.

Love his size. But I think someone posted yesterday that he'll have a hard time making the team bacause he's always asking the trainers to flush sand out of his vagina or something. He's soft, according to Broaddus.

hopefully our defensive line has some quality depth this year.

Sounds like it could be possible.
