OXNARD, Calif. -- Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr said after a few weeks away from the game, that he's ready to handle the new defensive scheme from defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

Last season, Carr played in a 3-4 scheme under Rob Ryan, who was released after the 2012 season. Carr will now play in the famed Tampa 2 scheme that's designed to create more turnovers.

"Very excited and we had enough time off to kind of regroup and get our minds right for this long season," Carr said Friday evening as the Cowboys arrived at the team hotel in preparation of training camp. "We put in a lot of work in OTAs and the offseason and now it's time to pick back up where we left off."

As a defense, the Cowboys finished tied for 28th with 16 total turnovers forced and last in the NFC with seven interceptions. Overall, the Cowboys had the 19th best defense in the NFL at 355.4 yards allowed per game and were one of at least nine teams to give up at least 25 points per game on average.

"Everybody is just sticking together," Carr said. "We know what happened last year, and at the end of the day, we're still in the fight in the last game (a loss to Washington). There were a couple of plays we wish we could have back, but now we get to have a fresh start and guys have their minds right and hopefully this will be the year we turn the corner."

Nitpicky maybe... But is anyone else tired of hearing how proud the team is of having a chance to win the division on the last day? You were 8-7, hardly some great achievement. The only reason you had a chance was because the division sucked.

Just part of the excuse-making policy this team and several of it's fan base has adopted the last 16 years or so.

It is a loser mentality and it has been around for a couple of years. Instead of outpacing the rest of the division, it is just viewed that if we are good enough to somehow squeak into the playoffs we can do what the Giants have done twice.

The one thing I notice is that we don't seem to be all that focused on winning the division. A lot of teams trying to get over the hump adopt the idea that the first thing we have to do is take the division and they concentrate a lot on doing just that.

What do we do? Go hire Kiffin who got abused by Chip Kelly and has shown a definite inability to solve the read option which the Redskins also employ.

With all the injuries we had, I think it is impressive we had a shot to win the division. Especially after how we rallied after that one guy died.

And I'm not a guy that uses the injury excuse as a crutch. But you have to admit last year was unreal. The whole middle of our defense was street free agents basically.
