Houston officially added former Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips as its defensive coordinator today.

With the club at 1-7, Cowboys owner-general manager Jerry Jones fired Phillips in November. The Cowboys were 34-22 in the regular season and 1-2 in the playoffs with Phillips as coach.

The move will save Jones at least $1 million.

Phillips was under contract through the 2011 season. Jones can now subtract what Texas will pay Phillips from what the Cowboys owed him. The lower-level pay for a defensive coordinator is about $1 million.
