Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips talked with KILT radio in Houston this week in an interview transcribed by SportsRadioInterviews.com. Some excerpts:
On his excitement surrounding a first-round pick like Dez Bryant:
“He’s a real talent. Most players have what we call holes in them. There’s something that they can’t do well. He seems to have all the tools. … He can run, he can catch, he’s very athletic. We’re excited about him. Like you said, you don’t see many rookies that come in. Of course, usually we’re picking later in the draft, which is where we want to be. We don’t usually find those kind of players late in the first round.”
On whether Tony Romo will continue to develop:
"He’s thrown for a lot of yards. I think his average per attempt is probably the highest in the league. That’s one of the top stats there is, maybe the top stat for a quarterback, is average for attempt. … I hope he can get better, but he’s at a high level right now. He’s one of the top quarterbacks in the league and we wouldn’t want anybody else but him.”
On how Jason Witten will be used with all the available offensive weapons:
“Jason’s always been a go-to guy. He catches almost 100 passes every year. He’s a great tight end, a great leader and has all the things you want in a tight end and a blocker. We’ll just keep using him the way we’ve been using him, which is getting him the football 80-100 times in the passing game.”
On which running back will get the bulk of the carries:
“Well, we’re going to go with the one that’s doing well. Marion looks as good as he’s looked. Marion actually started the year tremendous last year. He was the leader per carry rusher for the first three or four games of the season. We actually improved our running game last year. We were in the top 10 in running last year, which we hadn’t been before. It’s great to have all those guys.”
