Last week I joked that the media types had labeled at least thirteen players as "sure top 10 guys." Now, the same phenomenon appears to be occurring in the late 1st. How many players are now referred to as "possible late 1st rounders?" Too many to fit into that range, which is good news for Dallas' 2nd pick.
Here's the latest I've been able to gather. Rumors at this time must be viewed with suspicion, but view them all the same:
-- Cornerbacks open the day. Brandon Boykin and Josh Robinson are seen as the names who can start the anticipated run in the early 2nd.
-- Josh Norman is in a position similar to Janoris Jenkins'; character concerns have knocked him off some teams' boards.
-- Jenkins' talent will keep him from falling too far in the 2nd and he is thought to be part of that initial corner run with Boykins and Robinson.
-- On the flip side, there's a growing consensus that South Carolina's Stephon Gilmore will go in the top 10. That's bad news for Dre Kirkpatrick, but on the other hand, Gilmore's high rise should keep Kirkpatrick from falling too far. One person I spoke to says he expects Kirkpatrick to go in the mid-1st.
-- Syracuse DE Chandler Jones is the hot name of the day. He's seen as a solid 1st now and could go as high as the top 15 or top 20. His admirers see some Jason Pierre-Paul in him.
-- DE Vinny Curry could move into the late 1st, with a team like New England one of his possible suitors.
-- Whitney Mercilus has lost some buzz and may drop into the late 1st, according to one source.
-- This source said the same thing about Dontari Poe. He's lost some mojo and may also drop into the 20s.
More later today.
