Quarterback Tony Romo took two sacks in the first quarter at Houston. Both came on blitzes, a tactic the Cowboys have seen more of than usual during exhibition games.
The usual plan, which the Cowboys follow, is not to unveil blitzes until the regular season. In addition to Houston, Oakland and San Diego have blitzed the Cowboys in exhibition games. Romo, finding a silver lining, said the prep work on blitzes will help in the long run.
"It's been unlike normal," Romo said. "We've gotten a lot of pressures that have allowed us to see what maybe we aren't doing a good job with. That's a benefit, even though you don't execute as well. It's frustrating when you're a part of it, but it shows us what we need to correct."
The Cowboys were quick learners against Houston. After being sacked twice in his first five passing plays, Romo was not sacked in his final 15 passes.
Briefly: Wide receiver Sam Hurd continues the good fight to keep his roster spot. Hurd had two catches for 32 yards against Houston and has caught the last 10 passes thrown to him. ... Wide receiver Terrell Hudgins, running Herb Donaldson, tight end Scott Sicko, defensive end Jimmy Saddler-McQueen, linebacker Brandon Sharpe and cornerback Teddy Williams were available but did not play against Houston. ... The Cowboys must drop five players by Tuesday to reach the roster limit of 75. The final cut, to 53, comes Saturday. ... The Cowboys are last in the league for rushing yards at 54.5 per game. Kansas City leads with 150 yards .
