** Light workout with players in jerseys and helmets. They were off the field in one hour, 45 minutes.

** Former Cowboys tight end Eric Bjornson (1995-99) was a visitor at the morning practice. He spent some time catching up with Wade Wilson and Jason Garrett . No truth to the rumor that Jerry Jones wanted to sign him up now because of the shortage of healthy tight ends on the roster.

** The practice dealt mostly with individual techniques to start. Running backs, wide receivers and running backs worked on ball security. The runners and receivers had to hold the football while a teammate yanked on a cord in an attempt to force a fumble. The quarterbacks worked holding the ball high and with two hands as they slide around the pocket before making a throw.

** Wide receivers coach Ray Sherman spent a lot of time working with the wide receivers on blocking in the running game. The Cowboys have some good blockers in Miles Austin , Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton and their work in the past has led to big runs. Sherman wanted to make sure the wide outs kept their vision on the safety even as they were blocking a cornerback to help create some second-level separation.

** With Martellus Bennett and Scott Sicko out with injuries, Jason Witten has to take more of the individual reps with newcomer DajLeon Farr. Usually a veteran lets the younger players take some of that work but Witten doesn't have a choice now.

** Manny Johnson, Kevin Ogletree and Teddy Williams worked as kick returners during the special teams' portion of practice. David Buehler and Mat McBriar did not do any live kicking as the unit went through coverage and return responsibilities.

Observations from morning practice, another angle

Gerry Fraley / Reporter

+ No snaps for No. 3 quarterback Stephen McGee during the team-offense portion of the light practice. That's how it will be for McGee until the final exhibition game. The Cowboys' main concern now is getting the top two quarterbacks, Tony Romo and Jon Kitna, ready for opening day.

+ Offensive guard Montrae Holland appeared to run well and could be on the verge of returning to practice after a nine-day absence because of a strained hamstring. Offensive tackle Alex Barron (ankle) is still limping and was limited in his rehab work.

+ Kitna had a noticeable wobble on his deep throws. Wide receiver Jesse Holley hauled in one of the throws with a superb one-handed grab.

+ Kevin Ogletree and Manny Johnson returned kickoffs during the special-teams portion of practice. In games, the injured Titus Ryan and Bryan McCann have returned kickokffs along with Ogletree. They have combined for a 25-yard average, an improvement of five yards over the regular-season performance last year.
