They're probably not first- or second-round needs for the Cowboys this year.
This is always an interesting position to track before each draft because many prospects were pass-rushing defensive ends in college, like DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer. It takes a lot of projection for teams to see if a rookie can properly transition to stand-up linebacker.
3-4 defenses can never have too many linebackers, so it's a position worth considering for the Cowboys at some point in the draft. There just so happens to be some outstanding prospects available high, like North Carolina's Robert Quinn, UCLA's Akeem Ayers, Missouri's Aldon Smith, Purdue's Ryan Kerrigan and Georgia's Justin Houston.
The Cowboys spent first-rounders on linebackers in three of the last six drafts: 2005 (Ware), 2006 (Bobby Carpenter) and 2007 (Spencer). Carpenter didn't pan out, and Spencer's production dipped last season.
But they still seem set with Ware and Spencer and still have something invested in 2009 fourth-rounders Victor Butler and Brandon Williams. Offensive line, defensive line, safety and cornerback are widely regarded as the target positions.
Interesting, though, that outside linebacker looks stocked in the first and second round if they were looking for pure value.
