Sherrington: Why I have 'serious doubts' about Cowboys' Rob Ryan

Catch SportsDay On Air twice per week on Fox Sports Southwest, when Dallas Morning News experts discuss hot sports topics from the Cowboys,Mavericks, Stars, Rangers and colleges (check our TV listings for air times).

Here are a few highlights from Thursday's episode featuring Barry Horn and Kevin Sherrington:

On if Rob Ryan has to prove himself this season:

Horn: I think it’s correct. Rob Ryan does not have a track record. It’s not like he was a genius at his last stop. People like him, he’s a fun-loving guy, he’s a great quote – the best quote in Jason Garrett’s stable of monotony. But hey, show us on the field. This could well be the year.

Sherrington: That’s one of those situations that we always say about quarterbacks. Does the guy win or not? Has he won a Super Bowl or not? We always make a judgment on a quarterback if he won a Super Bowl. Well, Dan Marino never won one and he was pretty good. … I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he’s been on lousy teams. I don’t care how much of genius you are – if you don’t have the personnel, you’re not going to win. Having said that, I have serious doubts about the guy. Last year, going into the season, he had this big encyclopedia of defense that he wants to put in and he puts it all in before the first game, and the guys’ heads are all swimming. They don’t know what they’re doing out there. And I’m convinced the reason he did that is because they were playing the Jets and his brother in Game 1. He wants to show the world, “I can go up against my brother. I’m not going to go up against my brother with half my playbook in.” To me, that’s bad coaching. He wants to give them everything, but he’s got to know that there’s no way they can absorb all this, especially with the short time they had. That was not a Jason Garrett hire, that was a Jerry hire. I do believe that after this year is over, we’ll see. If it’s a bad year and things don’t go well, he’ll be out.

This is Ryan's put-up-or-shut-up season. He has more than ample talent and many of the players have had a year in his system.

I like his creativity. There is a boom-or-bust quality to his system. When he guesses wrong with his call, his team is vulnerable to getting gouged. When he guesses right, there's a good chance of a disruptive play.

In the New York game, I especially liked how the team was going after the ball aggressively (e.g., attempting to strip the ball). With that and the new corners, the team looks primed for more takeaways.
