Roger Staubach: Cowboys will be 11-5 or 10-6; calls Tony Romo a Top 5 QB

ARLINGTON – Several former Cowboys players were on hand to watch the team practice for two hours Thursday evening at Cowboys Stadium in the team’s only open practice in Texas.

The one former player who stood out in a crowd of legends was quarterback Roger Staubach. He was asked his thoughts on this year’s team and even gave a prediction.

Staubach said he believes the Cowboys will reach the playoffs in 2012 and finish the regular season at either 11-5 or 10-6.

“I think this is a really good football team,” Staubach said. “It’s probably not enough depth as you would like to have, but if they keep people healthy they should have a great year.”

Staubach has always been a strong supporter of current Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. That hasn’t changed.

“How do you not [support Romo]? I don’t get it,” Staubach said. “This guy is one heck of a quarterback. He doesn’t have all the ammunition around him. I’m a big Aikman fan, too, and I thinkTroywould say hey he had some pretty good guys around him. I know I did. I think this team is stronger and they’re just fortunate to have one of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL.”

Staubach didn’t stop with the Cowboys’ offense. He even offered his thoughts on the team’s defense.

“I think Rob Ryan is the real deal as a defensive coach and now he has some players to work with,” Staubach said. “I think their defense is going to be a lot better this year.”

I think our entire year will be dictated by our offensive line play and the health of the team. Having Dez(allpro this year) and Austin as options with Witten and Murray. The potential of our offense is limitless only If the offensive line can be solid. I think with the additions we have made in our secondary and the transition away from Brookings and James. This team is poised to be more consistent and better than the last few seasons

Roger was one of my boyhood heroes.

He's always upbeat about the team (whether they deserve it or not).

Yep, I can find old clips where he's pumping sunshine about Drew Henson. Call it "professional courtesy."

Does Roger still have that horribly ridiculous haircut/style? The clown, I think they call it.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming season?

I think the take you provided earlier in this thread is pretty much on the mark.

I'd guess the following range: 7-9 to 9-7.

Like nearly everyone else, I have little confidence in the OL. I have little confidence that the top two WRs will remain healthy through the season. The defense looks to be a bit better than last year, but I don't think the offense will be as good as last year's.

Roger Staubach sees Cowboys in playoffs
August, 24, 2012
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Roger Staubach admits he sometimes doesn’t always see straight when it comes to the Cowboys because of his loyalty to the team and the people he has gotten to know over the years.

When the Cowboys Hall of Fame quarterback looks at the 2012 version of the squad, he sees a playoff team.

“I say it’s either going to be 10-6 or 11-5,” Staubach said after Thursday’s practice at Cowboys Stadium. “That’s not bad. That gets you in the playoffs ... If you stay healthy and get people healthy at the end of the year, Dallas will be in the hunt.”

Staubach admits concern about the team’s overall depth, especially at wide receiver behind Miles Austin and Dez Bryant.

“They have a great quarterback,” Staubach said. “I think Jason (Garrett) is growing to be a heckuva coach. Last year we were hurting in the secondary and I think hopefully we’ve solved some problems there. Keep the run game healthy. Make sure the wide receivers, Miles, he’s got to stay healthy, and Dez, on paper if we keep people healthy, we’ll be in thick of it.”

Staubach has never hidden his affinity for Tony Romo.

“How do you not? I don’t get it,” Staubach said. “To be honest, this guy is one heck of a quarterback. He doesn’t have all the ammunition around him. I’m a big (Troy) Aikman fan and I think Troy will say he had pretty good people around him. I know I did. But Romo, they’re fortunate to have one of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL.”
