Rob Ryan: Brandon Carr even better than expected

IRVING, Texas – Brandon Carr better be good. The Cowboys obviously thought he had Pro Bowl potential when they gave the cornerback a five-year, $50.1 million deal in free agency.

Believe it or not, defensive coordinator Rob Ryan believes the hype. In fact, Ryan is already raising the bar for Carr after coaching the corner for five OTA practices.

“He’s actually better (than expected),” Ryan said. “He’s outstanding. I knew he was great, but the guy is special.”

Everyone knows Ryan tends to pump up his players. What makes Carr so special?

“Just because he shuts down everybody,” Ryan said. “He can cover anybody. He’s got long arms, great length and he’s a great person who works his tail off. He takes coaching, and I’m really impressed with him.”

The 6-foot, 207-pound Carr, a versatile corner who excels in press coverage, is working on the left side after playing primarily right cornerback with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Ryan said Carr can play anywhere the Cowboys need him. Ryan can envision using Carr to shadow an elite receiver all over the field, such as, oh say, the Giants’ Victor Cruz in the Sept. 5 season opener.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Ryan said. “But if we need to shut somebody down, or put him on a bigger guy, I’m sure Brandon will be up to the challenge.

Oh great. Five practices and he's going to Canton.

(I hate offseason / preseason hype.)

There's always an instant rush to believe, especially if the reports are extremely positive towards Cowboys players.

Ryan is always praising shitty players.

Just last year we heard how Anthony Spencer was going to be a sack machine and Orlando Scandrick was very impressive.

I hope Ryan is genuinely impressed with Carr.

Ryan, along with me, thinks that Barry Church played well last year and we should be seeing more and more of him.

It's me and Ryan on the Church-bandwagon. Either declare now or fuck off when he is making gamechanging plays this year.

Unless the entire NFL slows down besides him, Church will not be making gamechanging plays on the regular.

I don't even remember his 40 time. He is slow on the field.

Makes plays in training camp?

I agree.

I just shake my head when I hear the offseason hype. I don't care who it comes from - Ryan, Jones, Garrett, the players, the press, the fans. It doesn't matter.

When I look back on the past 5 years or so -- Never has so much been said about team that has done so little.

I did get excited when during OTAs, Parcells compared the brand new rookie, Demarcus Ware, to LT. I was excited because it was clear that Parcells actually believed what he said. Off the top of my head, I don't recall a time since then that the hype was to be believed.

I think a lot of it is the fact that we have a few great players.

It's been interesting to watch the national media over the last 5 or so years. IMO, they've gone from "heh, look at those guys choke", to "why are these guys not really good?", to now, "are theses guys going to win big with this talented group?"

I don't see the hatred for the team from the national media like I did in 2007-2008, it's gone from hatred to almost pity.
