While the Cowboys starters aren't expected to play much if at all Saturday, after 11 days of practices, the preseason game is welcome.

"I wish I could play," said tight end Jason Witten, the 14-year veteran. "Anytime you go through camp and you get ready to go against somebody else, there's an excitement that comes with that. It's real football.

"But more so this year than any year, coming off the 4-12, this really kicks off the season. For our entire football team we're anxious for that."

Heath on concussion protocol: Safety Jeff Heath is on concussion protocol and won't play Saturday. The fourth-year player out of Saginaw Valley State left practice early Thursday, and coach Jason Garrett said afterward Heath was still being evaluated.

Briefly: The Cowboys continue to work DeMarcus Lawrence at right defensive end after he led the team with eight sacks from the left side last season. ..LB Sean Lee was a limited participant in practice. Garrett said that Lee is "working through some different things."
