Here’s The Selling Point To Mike Jenkins

IRVING, Texas -- Maybe "selling point" isn't the right term. Mike Jenkins is under contract with the Cowboys for one more season and is expected to honor that. But team owner/GM Jerry Jones has publicly expressed what he feels is incentive for the fifth-year cornerback to come to training camp, compete and ultimately play out his 2008 rookie deal.

Jones' selling point, if we want to call it that, is the potential benefit of contributing to a big winner in the NFL. He has compared the Cowboys' rebuilt secondary to the 1990s Cowboys' defensive line -- a deep rotation of starters and backups that anchored their championship defense.

Win a title, and even role players can parlay their championship experience into nice contracts. Jimmie Jones was a defensive line example, signing a multi-million dollar deal with the Rams after playing a reserve role in the Cowboys' first two Super Bowls of the decade. John Gesek (Washington) and Super Bowl XXX Larry Brown (Oakland) were others who cashed in.

Jenkins is different than those guys. He already has made a Pro Bowl and proven he is an upper-tier corner in the league when healthy and playing at his best.

Even if he doesn't start, Jerry sees a way for him to help put Rob Ryan's defense over the top -- and in turn, make the Cowboys contenders again.

Then, the money will follow. If not Dallas, somewhere else.

"I told him about our rotation in the years we won our first Super Bowls, how the defensive line rotation set a standard similar to the ones (like) the New York rotation (now)," Jones said last week when Jenkins arrived for the mandatory minicamp. "I see him joining in with our other corners with the depth we've got and doing something ... that could be a part of something special and enhance his career."
