@nickeatman: Working on the specifics but Phil Costa has signed an extension to avoid restricted free agency.

I honestly don't see the appeal with Costa.

Is this real life?

The Team obviously likes him.

Babe has always spoke highly of him which makes me positive. Broaddus hates him, which also makes me positive about him.

Hopefully we add a couple of pieces to where mack and costa have to compete for that spot at center.

I'm apprehensive because (1) he looked terrible two years ago. (2) this past year was a wash. (3) he doesn't have ideal measurables. (4) back injuries are typically bad news for OL. Tend to linger.

I just don't understand this teams infatuation with him.

I guess I'll wait to see what kind of extension he gets. But I don't see what was wrong with giving him a low tender (like someone would steal him from us), and then let him earn an extension this year.

mid he went to IR because of a dislocated ankle, his back was fine at that point.

if we actually draft or sign a legitimate guard and tackle this spring...having costa or mack as a backup will put us in great shape.

having costa and mack starting will put us where we were last year.

Meh. Nothing to get worked up about.

Phil Costa gets two-year deal

March, 2, 2013

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – Set to be a restricted free agent, the Cowboys signed center Phil Costa to a two-year contract, according to a source.

As a restricted free agent Costa would have earned $1.323 million in 2013 and now will count less on the cap with the Cowboys tying him up through 2014.

Costa played in only parts of three games in 2012, leaving the season-opener at the New York Giants after one season with a back injury that knocked him out of most of training camp and a dislocated ankle on Oct. 21 at Carolina that eventually required season-ending surgery.

Without Costa, the Cowboys needed Ryan Cook (11 games) and Mackenzy Bernadeau (two) to start at center last season.

Costa started every game in 2011 after making the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2010.

At the NFL scouting combine, owner and general manager Jerry Jones praised Costa’s smarts and work ethic while also acknowledging limitations. Jones said the Cowboys would need strong guard play on either side of Costa.

“I can see going with Costa at center for several years,” Jones said last week.

The Cowboys will go for at least two more.

Costa is the second player the Cowboys re-signed in the last week, joining long snapper L.P. Ladouceur.

Costa/Mack and Free on the bench makes for decent depth.

Just need the starters to be much better

I think the thing is is that it's so hard to find a quality Center nowadays. Just look at what's available in the draft his year. There are maybe 2 certifiable starting Centers.

Phil Costa's deal is worth $2.7m. He received signing bonus of $450k. Move saves Cowboys $348k vs cap this year.
