IRVING, Texas – The second session of organized team activities that was open to the media was on Tuesday, and here are some observations:

** Kyle Wilber worked with the first team at right defensive end with DeMarcus Ware out. Tyrone Crawford handled that spot in the first week that was open to the media. Wilber had a productive day. He was active and was around the ball. Remember, he was going against Tyron Smith, too. Wilber did a nice job reading a reverse to WR Terrance Williams.

** Dwayne Harris turned into a tremendous punt returner last year and he took the first-team work on Tuesday, but later he was joined by Cole Beasley, B.W. Webb and Anthony Amos.

** Teams sometimes shy away from putting starters on special teams, so it was interesting to see Sean Lee and Bruce Carter on the punt coverage team. Lee served as the personal protector.

** Morris Claiborne came up with a nice interception of a Kyle Orton throw on a slant-and-go to Miles Austin. Claiborne did not bite on the fake and was able to stay underneath the route to come up with the turnover.

** Orton struggled in one-on-one throws, especially the deeper throws. Maybe it was the wind, but he was unable to get the ball to open Dez Bryant a few times. Bryant won every rep he had against Brandon Carr.

** When the Cowboys ran their two-minute drill, Williams served as the No. 3 receiver over Harris and did not come off the field. He caught a nice corner route from Orton, tapping his feet just inside the sideline.

** Jason Witten caught seven passes in team and seven-on-seven drills. He ended the first-team two-minute drill with a touchdown down the seam after beating Matt Johnson at the line. Witten was able to bend his route a little to the outside to throw Johnson off balance before coming back to the middle with added separation.

** Speaking of tight ends, James Hanna had the play of the day with a one-handed grab down the seam as a defender closed quickly. Hanna continues to be the second tight end behind Witten when the Cowboys use their 12 personnel group over Gavin Escobar. It’s not that Escobar isn’t doing well, it’s that Hanna is doing better.

** In the battle of No. 2 offense vs. defense, J.J. Wilcox ended the day with an interception of Nick Stephens on a pass across the middle. Stephens was looking for Beasley, who appeared to slow down on his route.

** With Justin Durant out with a hamstring injury, Alex Albright was the starting strong-side outside linebacker. He also played some inside linebacker as well.

Cause for concern with Carr? Or just Dez doin what he gon do?

If Bryant is who we think he is then he should be winning every battle in these offense geared activities.

But yeah Carr probably isn't very good. At least so far he's shown almost nothing here.

As Dez's confidence and maturity level grows, he is going to continue to dominate.

I kind of wish we'd bring in a veteran QB (non mega-jag) to a 1-year deal to push Orton. I don't like that he is just in the safe position, no real shot at starting, no real competition for the #2 job.

Good for Hanna. We (as an organization) usually have way too much faith in our young, unproven players but in Hanna's case it seems they were so enamored with Escobar that they disregarded his potential.

Want to hear how Frederick is handling stuff. Specifically, shotgun snaps and stunts. A center who can routinely handle those 2 issues would be a sight unseen in Dallas for several years.

Alex Albright is not a 4-3 OLB. The sooner everyone realizes that, the better we will be. We can't afford slow SOLB's and slow SS's on the field together. West Coast offenses will murder us with drag and crossing routes.

Good for Wilber. I think his best position has always been 4-3 RDE. Not sure he would hold up at LDE for a long period of time.

Yeah.

The way we do it is stupid. At best having a "proven backup" allows you to tread water for a bit, which is ok I guess if Romo goes down for three games midseason and we try to steal one of them with a great defensive performance and Kyle just not fucking anything up.

But that's never paid off big time. When's the last time having a proven backup really helped a team? Randall Cunningham in Minnesota?

Way better to have some young guy. We can probably steal the same game we stole with Orton, and if he doesn't completely fuck up he becomes a semi-valuable trading piece maybe.

Who would be this third vet non-jag QB? There aren't enough decent QBs to go around the league as it is, and I think we're pretty lucky to have one good backup. I don't see how it's practical to have two of those guys.

Competition is always a good thing for your team, and IMO necessary. Orton knows he can slack off and be safe.

There are guys out there right now and some may be hungry enough to push Orton. Orton playing better (trying harder) is a great thing for us. Plus, with his contract, I'm not sure he's back in 2014.

I know... I was talking about cmd's suggestion.

I'd rather go with a young guy as well because my thought is that if Romo goes down, your year is pretty much shot anyway. I'd have a vet when you had a young QB who might need mentoring or a relief pitcher if he faltered. But as backup vet QBs go, I do think Orton is the rare vet backup that you might could win with if your defense were playing well enough.
