IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys' defense has been beaten up this season.

It's allowed four quarterbacks to throw for 400 or more yards, a first in NFL history. It gave up a franchise-record 623 yards to the Detroit Lions on Sunday while failing to stop wide receiver Calvin Johnson from picking up 329 receiving yards, the second-best performance in league history.

Defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has a defense that ranks last overall and against the pass. Oh, yeah, the Cowboys are 17th against the run.

"It is what it is you know," Kiffin said after Wednesday's practice. "I do like the fact we're second in the league in turnovers."

In the NFL this season, 18 teams produced three or more turnovers in games with only the Cowboys losing their contest.

While turnovers are nice and normally lead to victories, the secondary and pass rush have been big problems.

Kiffin has three starters in the secondary, J.J. Wilcox, Morris Claiborne and Barry Church, battling injuries that could cost them some games. Wilcox and Claiborne are doubtful for Sunday while Church plans on playing against the Minnesota Vikings.

The pass rush has missed defensive end DeMarcus Ware the past two games as he continues to nurse a thigh injury. He's doing more rehab work, but it looks like he'll return Nov. 10 against the New Orleans Saints.

"Very, very close," Kiffin said. "You got to finish those games and finishing is tough and [when] you give up yards that's not good. The name of the game is to win and we should have won the game, no doubt about it."

Top 10 offseason regrets blowing up in teams' faces

By David SteeleSporting News

Cowboys Fire Rob Ryan

When he was replaced as defensive coordinator, Ryan was considered part of the problem in Dallas. He’s now part of the solution in New Orleans. The 6-1 Saints have gone from last in total defense and next-to-last in passing defense and points, to 12th overall, ninth against the pass and third in points. The 4-4 Cowboys, led by new coordinator Monte Kiffin? Last in total defense and passing defense. Ryan’s new and old teams can go toe-to-toe on devastating injuries. His new team hasn’t given up 51 points or 80-yard, 50-second game-winning drives, though.

One of the big differences is they let Ryan have some say in the type of players he needs for his defense.

While here, he had to try to make it work with the players Jerry wanted. Big difference.

Eh, I guarantee you he had a say in getting Carr and Claiborne in here. In fact I think that's one reason he's gone -- Jerry was pissed he put all those resources into what Rob wanted and got shit results out of it.

From what I've heard from people who actually have watched tape, Payton isn't letting him do a lot of the super-exotic crazy unsound stuff he used to do here.

Whatever the case may be, I hope the Saints roll a 50 spot on us and we're held to like 13 points, with the story leading up to the game all week being how Jerry shatcanned Ryan and hired Kiffin to fix everything.

Rob Ryans' defenses generally does well in their first year. It's the following when shit comes apart. The guy was not even showing up to his own defensive meetings. Sorry. Our defense may not what we would like, but I do not regret seeing Fat Rob shown the door.

This year we've had the most turnovers than I don't know when. We had 16 turnovers all last year, we broke that in about the 4th or 5th game, maybe?

WHAT! Jerry brought in Carr and Claiborne for Fat Rob. And which player was it that the Cowboys selected in the 4th last year, that showed both Rob and Henderson hi-fiving the selection?

We have got a huge ass kicking headed our way.

Jerry being the marketing man he is, I hope he realizes how big this game is. Saints fans have grown in numbers tremendously in Northwest Louisiana. They're like roaches. We need to win this game.

I'm sure Rob was excited about both of those players but Jerry initiated those moves. Jerry was convinced Claiborne was better than Patrick Peterson as as good as Deion, not Rob. Carr was the premiere CB on the market. Ryan wanted to blitz like crazy and I'm guessing he told Jerry get me man corners. Rob had no say on how much Carr got paid or giving up two picks for Claiborne. Rob wanted a big nose tackle and a cover safety and never got either. He got them right away for New Orleans.

Also, what's worse?

An owner who dictates which players and what styles the coaches get

or

an owner who is influenced by new coaches every few years and changes the scheme on a whim ?

Either way, we lose.

Rob Ryan didn't rank Claiborne the highest rated CB since Deion.
