Mendez: Felix Jones says kickoff fumble caused by helmet hit

Felix Jones says kickoff fumble caused by helmet hit, 'something I've got to work on'

Felix Jones said the ball got hit by a helmet when he fumbled on the opening kickoff.

“Man, he made a great play,” Jones said after Sunday’s 27-7 loss. Michael Robinson was credited with causing the fumble, which led to a field goal for the Seahawks and a 3-0 lead.

“The ball, he hit right on the ball, his head, helmet,” Jones said. “Ball flew out. He made a great tackle. That’s something I’ve got to work on and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Jones continued to return kickoffs. He took only one touchback. Twice he returned kicks from 8 yards deep.

“You want to be a playmaker,” he said. “You want to go out there and do things for your team and help your team out and put them in a good position. That’s what we’re doing on special teams. We’ve got to continue to do that and get better.”

Jerry Jones hasn’t lost confidence in Felix.

“I don’t think that I’m worried about him fumbling the ball. At all,” the Cowboys owner said. “We need to get him some holes. We need to get some blocking for him up there as well.”

Felix, who averaged 21.8 yards on five returns Sunday and 20.3 yards on three returns against the Giants, said he felt bad after the play.

“You feel bad when you put the team in a bad position,” he said. “I did that. So just got to make up for it and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

He said his own confidence is up, also.

“Feel good. Just got to make sure I stay on top of my game and keep getting better every week,” he said.

It was caused by him being terrible at football.

Every time he's on the field we have a negative play.

Broaddus suggested the team might cut this guy in the pre-season and I scoffed at the idea.

Jokes on me.

As usual.

If there ever was a time for a message cut it's today. What purpose does he serve on the team?

He's a terrible KR. He dances rather than putting it up in there. He can't catch. He leaves yards on the field running the ball. His confidence is clearly shot. Get rid of him.

I would rather see a young and hungry Tanner get a shot than an Out of shape, lazy player

What would Jimmy do?

My guess, the message cut - as SP suggests.

For all Garrett says about replicating what he learned from his successful coaches, it doesn't seem like we see much of Jimmy's emotionality in Garrett.

I suspect he's getting benched, and they might be open to finding a trade partner (if any exists) now.

There's something wrong with this guy now. He's either injured and not saying anything, or he's gone Roy Williams (OU) on us and just lost the desire. We can all complain about how injury prone he's been, but prior to now he'd always been pretty good when he was on the field, especially on the field and healthy.

Take a slow, weak, backup wildcat RB in the first round over 2,000 yard complete workhorses. What can go wrong?

He doesn't even come close to catching passes btw. It's not like it hits his palms and he fails to squeeze it. He doesn't even put his hands near where the ball is about to be

Mendenhall dead. McFadden can't play a half without the trainers table.

Ray rice....not bad.

God ray rice with romo? Now that's a guy who could win a game by himself . And we might've still drafted Murray. Did you see that block he had yesterday? He laid a guy out twice

Garrett never would've used him anyway probably

The crazy thing is out of that draft he's like the only one with any staying power. RBs were drafted out the ass and only one of them is a reliable year-in year-out workhorse.

Full disclosure MB4 got me on the RR bandwagon that season. Not that it's surprising he was just being a NJ homer but still.

To be fair I liked so many of the backs in that draft besides Felix I would've probably traded down added a 2nd or 3rd and let someone else decide for me.

I just don't see how what Felix did translated at all and think they got way too cute. It was a gimmicky pick.

The RW11 and Felix picks if used on marginal LOS talent would've helped this team out exponentially
