Mendez: Cowboys putting plans for Bernadeau work at center on the shelf for now

Cowboys putting plans for Bernadeau work at center on the shelf for now, it looks like

It sounds like the Cowboys aren’t going to put a big priority on getting Mackenzy Bernadeau more snaps at center now that the regular season has started.
Asked about it Monday at Valley Ranch, coach Jason Garrett said, “We’ll probably proceed as we’ve proceeded on the offensive line. Again, we like how those guards are playing, so we anticipate playing them in those spots.”

The Cowboys talked in the offseason about developing Bernadeau at center. They signed him to be a starting guard, but there was a thought he might get a look at center to push Phil Costa.

The Cowboys have since traded for another center, Ryan Cook, used another guard, David Arkin, as a backup center, and never got far in their training camp plans for Bernadeau at center.

“But he does have position flex, so we’ve got to make sure we have a guy who can snap the football if Ryan can’t snap the football,” Garrett said. “Again, we’ll evaluate Phil’s situation day to day, and we’ll see how he fits into our plans this weekend and going forward.”

Costa, who hurt his back on the first play of the Giants game, was not out at practice during the portion open to reporters.
