Mel Kiper: Dallas Cowboys must improve interior o-line, suggests Syracuse’s Justin Pugh

About a month ago, mock drafts made it seem likely that the Dallas Cowboys would be selecting an offensive guard with their first-round pick. The two names that kept coming up were Alabama’s Chance Warmack and North Carolina’s Jonathan Cooper.
That no longer appears to be a likely scenario.
Cooper’s stock has risen considerably and Warmack is still projected to go as early as 10 and no later than 18, the Cowboys’ pick.
ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper, who had the Cowboys selecting Warmack in his latest mock draft, said Wednesday that it would be great for Dallas to land one of those guards but was far from guaranteeing their availability.
“I think Cooper could go in the top 10, Warmack could go in the top 11,” Kiper said during a conference call. “Out of Warmack or Cooper I think it would be more Warmack. That’s debatable, to see them drop all the way down to 18.”
So, who would be the next best options? Kiper named former Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro and former North Carolina defensive tackle Sylvester Williams.
Kiper pointed out that Vaccaro’s stock has slipped into the twenties because of an unimpressive 40-yard dash time. In regards to Williams, the draft guru said he’s a good fit for Monte Kiffin’s Tampa-Two defensive scheme.
If the Cowboys go that route, it still leaves a need at arguably the weakest position on the roster — the offensive line.
Kiper says that can still be addressed in the second round when the Cowboys pick at No. 47.
“If you don’t get Warmack or Cooper, Justin Pugh from Syracuse, who was a left tackle, can be a guard, can be a center,” Kiper said. “They have to improve the interior of the offensive line and Pugh would be a very nice addition at that point.”
Pugh, 6-4, 307 pounds, is considered a fit on the interior because he’s athletic but lacks the ideal arm length or overall size to line up at tackle.
