Machota: Aikman surprised Cowboys hired Monte Kiffin

Aikman surprised Cowboys hired Monte Kiffin

Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman said Friday he was surprised the team hired 72-year-old Monte Kiffin as its defensive coordinator.

Aikman mentioned that Jerry Jones said things were going to be uncomfortable around Valley Ranch after the Cowboys missed the postseason for the third consecutive season. Aikman then quipped that changing to Kiffin's 4-3 defensive scheme was going to make the players uncomfortable on the field.

"Really surprised with that," Aikman said on WFAN-AM 660 in New York. "There, for many, many years, it had to be 3-4. That's what they were about. And now, to bring in Monte Kiffin and go completely opposite, back to a 4-3 scheme. I think it's interesting that they're doing that in and of itself."

Although Aikman sounded perplexed by the move, he was confident that DeMarcus Ware would continue to be productive as a defensive end in the new scheme.

"He's going to excel no matter where he is, so I don't worry so much about him," Aikman said. "Just overall, and the way that they built this thing and then just to have a dramatic shift. And I don't know that they're done. I'm not sure that the changes are over yet."

It's not like we were running a traditional 3-4. We incorporated a ton of 4-3 looks.

the strategy was flawed. we were trying to be small, safe 3-4 and we've basically been drafting 4-3 players anyway.

the players we have fit the 4-3 better, thats why the change is being made...doesnt take a rocket scientist to see that

even if i gave you this excuse..which im not going to...what your explanation for the offense sucking?

we dont have the horses on offense or defense...its pretty simple

you win in this league by protecting the QB and getting after the QB...we are equally shitty at both

once we moved away from Parcells maybe.

While he was here with his planet theory we were trying to be as big as possible. At least we had an identity. I remember teams saying after we played them (Arizona and Indy iirc) that we were the most physical squad they played all year.

Guys on the Seattle line in 05 said it was pointless to try gunning against us because of how big and strong our line was.

And we were investing minimal resources to that end.

Not initially.

05 and 06 we added

Spears, canty, Ratliff, hatcher, spencer, ferguson, Bowen and in 04 traded for Kenyon Coleman from the raiders.

We also drafted montavious Stanley who didn't work out.

Not to mention bradie was a perfect fit and that Demarcus ware guy.

Parcells leaves and oh look, corner, wr, corner, wr, rb.....

Yep. Bigger, smarter on the field. Fewer mistakes. Quicker release. More athletic in his prime. Far more talented passer.

And maybe most important, W I N N E R

Don't think so. Aikman didn't have as quick a release as Romo. And Aikman would have suffered a lot more concussions with this Oline. Which is no surprise you left out escapability.

dbair gave up on red? or am i misremembering his stance? anyway you know how Romo sees the edge rushers and has the agility to spin or or move laterally to avoid the rush? aikman? not so much. Doug Free alone would have put him on the cart.

You need to go back and watch him in his prime then.

Aikman-2000, sure he'd be in big trouble here. Aikman in his prime, much much better in terms of quick release, speed to scramble etc etc
