Mel Kiper: Despite being one of draft’s top players, Chance Warmack falls to Cowboys at No. 18

The Dallas Cowboys need to upgrade their offensive line and Alabama guard Chance Warmack would be a good option if he’s available at the No. 18 pick.

Most experts are currently saying he’ll be off the board by then,

ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper is not one of those experts.

In Kiper’s second mock draft installment, which was released Thursday, he had the 6-3, 320-pounder landing with the Cowboys.

“Follow my Big Board week to week and you’re probably surprised I could fathom a situation where Warmack is still around at No. 18,” Kiper wrote. “But remember, the mock also takes into account where I hear teams are valuing guys, and in the case of a player like Warmack, the positional value aspect hurts him as a guard. Make no mistake, he’s a stud, a dominant guard who makes your offensive line better the second he signs his contract. But he’s staying inside, period, limiting his shot at the top 10. Dallas could certainly use an upgrade at guard, and I don’t think the Cowboys can pass up Warmack at this spot on the board if he’s available.”

Kiper has Warmack as the ninth-ranked player in the 2013 draft class.

“Looked particularly dominant even among the Bama O-line. That says a lot,” Kiper wrote in his Big Board assessment. “He simply takes defenders where he wants them to go, utilizing great power and quickness at his size. A dominant run-blocker, Warmack isn’t just massive, but also moves well, with initial power in tight spaces and the ability to seek out LBs on the second level.”

In Kiper’s first mock draft he had Warmack going to the Arizona Cardinals with the seventh overall pick and the Cowboys selecting North Carolina offensive guard Jonathan Cooper.

Please let it be.

What a pisser that will be if this team passes on Warmack and Cooper and doesn't address online until the later rounds.

Alot of very good OL in this draft, including some who could be had late in round 1, or into the 2nd and 3rd rounds that could probably come in and start immediately and help us. Its not all about Warmack and Cooper, although I love Warmack and think Cooper will be really good too.

By later rounds I mean reaching for someone in the later part of the draft after all the big names are off the board ala a David Arkin type of pick. Would be crazy IMO if one of those 2 are staring us in the face and we pass. Not completely opposed to taking a few other highly regarded lineman later if available but if we take x,y, or z player from podunk tech and get force fed about his great upside then I'm going to shoot my neighbor Jerry in the face. He is the closest I can get to the real thing.
