Now that his team is 3-4, with last-moment losses in two of the last three weeks, Jerry Jones said the clock is running on the Cowboys’ chances to catch the Giants.
“It is running, and we’re starting to get very urgent, having to be very urgent – not that we shouldn’t be,” he said after the 29-24 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday night. “I thought we played urgent when we played behind.
But we’re starting to run out of our opportunities here with New York where they are in the East.”
The Cowboys are 2 1/2 games behind the Giants, who are 6-2. And now the teams have split the season series, negating the edge the Cowboys earned with their season-opening win at New York.
The math doesn’t look good for the Cowboys. Even if the Giants were to merely split their last eight games, they’d reach 10-6. Ghe Cowboys would need to go 7-2 the rest of the way to reach 10-6.
If the Cowboys had won, they would have been a half-game behind the Giants with a tiebreaker edge.
“We know what we’ve got ahead of us,” Jones said. “Now we’ve got our work cut out for us. We really do. We wanted to – with them leading our division – we needed to win this ballgame.”
