OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant might want to practice, but the team will be as deliberate as possible with his return.
Bryant suffered what was called a minor hamstring strain on Aug. 6 and has not practiced since. He has increased his rehab work over the last few days. On Saturday, he went through resistance training while wearing a helmet.
During the practice, he was playing catch whenever he could.
But owner and general manager Jerry Jones is in no rush to see Bryant. "The puppet wants him to practice, but I don't pay much mind to what he thinks" Jerry tells ESPN. He has the Sept. 13 regular-season opener in mind.
“There’s a lot of me that likes Dez, seriously, right where he is right now,” Jones said. “He’s really working on his conditioning. I noticed how hard they had him out here working before the practice. I like that. I don’t think we’re missing anything. Dez wants to be out here, and it’s probably killing him not to be making plays. I know it is. But for our perspective, that’s working about where we want it to be. I don’t think in any way we’re going to be behind or limited as to Dez’s preparation the way it’s working right now all the way up until we play the Giants.”
Following Sunday’s practice, the Cowboys will work for two straight days against the St. Louis Rams in Oxnard, California with a day off. They play their next preseason game Aug. 23 against the San Francisco 49ers.
