If DeMarco Murray leaves, Cowboys won't jump at free agent runners

March, 10, 2015

IRVING, Texas -- With DeMarco Murray now a free to sign anywhere else with the market open, the Dallas Cowboys' Plan B is more about the draft than finding a veteran, should the NFL’s leading rusher depart.

According to multiple sources, the Cowboys are not ready to check in on the middle- to lower-level running backs that are available, including C.J. Spiller and Darren McFadden, at this time.

At the NFL scouting combine, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the running back draft class is as strong as it has ever been. The Cowboys met with the top runners available in Indianapolis, including Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon.

The Cowboys have Joseph Randle under contract, but his fate could be tied to the incident this offseason in Wichita, Kansas. They gave Lance Dunbar the low tender as a restricted free agent, but he is not an every-down back. They re-signed Ryan Williams, who spent last season on the practice squad, to a two-year deal that included a $240,000 signing bonus.

Once again. Not having a viable strategy is embarrassing. This is not a strong RB class. Ryan Williams would be the number 1 RB in this class if he were just entering the draft from school. Any group of RB prospects that makes think "Oh well, at least we have Joseph Randle" is a terrible group.

lol everyone has been hoping the Cowboys make smart financial decisions (make mid-level signings, replace vets through the draft). Now that we're finally doing it, we're complacent.

I hope we can come away with that Ayali guy from Boise State. He's like Murray but with a bit more wiggle.

A rookie back is not what this team needs. You have to have someone back there that can pick up the blitz reliably.

You guys are pussies. If the rookie is able to pick up the blitz; we should be fine.

Your guys' way of reasoning in this regard is why Jerry shells out huge money for aging vets. He's so comfortable with them that there is no other alternative to them in his mind.

If they're so worried about it; just safeguard by brining in a old reliable mid-level vet and go RB by committee until the rook can handle the everydown role by himself.
