Heika: Moving DeMarcus Ware to defensive end is like asking Tony Romo to run the option

Catch SportsDay On Air twice per week on Fox Sports Southwest, when Dallas Morning News experts discuss hot sports topics from the Cowboys, Mavericks, Stars, Rangers and colleges (check our TV listings for air times). Here are a few highlights from Monday's episode featuring Rick Gosselin and Mike Heika:

On DeMarcus Ware possibly playing defensive end in the 4-3 defense:

Heika: “He’s an extremely talented individual. I’ve always been impressed by his presence too. He’s very smart. He carries himself very well. But is that really what you want to be doing with your best players? That’s like ok, we have a new offensive coordinator who wants to run the option so Tony (Romo) are you ready to run the option? He’s kind of set in his ways at this time. It would be one thing to bring in a 24-year-old and say we’re going to change the defense. It’s another thing to bring in a 32-year-old.”

Gosselin: “I saw this in Kansas City in 1993. Derrick Thomas was a Hall of Fame bound pass rusher. He was a dynamic pass rusher. He was a double digit sack guy. They went to a 4-3. They told Derrick put your hand on the ground. He went from 14 and a half sacks to eight. He was a third less player than he was as a stand-up 3-4 speed backer, which is what Ware is, and Derrick Thomas was 26 when he made the move. DeMarcus Ware is 32.”

Thomas never really dropped in production once they moved to the 4-3. He never replicated his 1990 season, but that was unlikely anyway. 20 sacks is hard to come by, especially when you got 20 sacks because you notched 7 in one game against the Seahawks.

Also Ware is 30 now he'll be 31 next season get your facts right Heika.

I don’t know if Ware will get those unblocked sacks anymore like he did this past season. Of course Ware can play any position and play it at a high level. I just think it’s a poor decision to move him. I think he was a perfect fit for the 3-4/standing up position. I think he will end up playing too many snaps, rushing too much and not being worth shit come the 4th quarter. I predict he misses a number of games due to injury.

Horrible analogy. It would be like asking Romo to go from from Air Coryell offense to West Coast offense.
