The Cowboys have cut wide receiver Anthony Armstrong to free up more salary cap space so that they could officially sign free agent safety Will Allen to a one-year deal, according to a source.

By cutting Armstrong and restructuring the contract of backup quarterback Kyle Orton on Wednesday the Cowboys freed up about $1 million in salary cap space to make room for the free agent signings of Allen and linebacker Justin Durant. Durant signed a two-year contract. Both visited the Cowboys at Valley Ranch on Monday.

Free agent safety Michael Huff also visited Valley Ranch on Monday, but on Wednesday the Baltimore Ravens announced they had agreed to terms with the former standout from Irving Nimitz and the University of Texas. Huff will sign a three-year, $6 million contract.

The Cowboys worked out Armstrong in mid-November last year and then signed him a week later. The speedy Armstrong didn’t catch a pass for the Cowboys last season. Armstrong, who turns 30 years old on Friday, is a former Dallas Desperados receiver and he played in high school at Carrollton Newman Smith.

Armstrong wasn't a guy who I ever saw as a fit here, so I could care less about him leaving.

I really like the yutes we have at WR.

I still think we need another WR to add to the mix and no, Armstrong wasn't it.

I like Harris but just feel we could use 1 more affordable veteran, especially with Miles' inability to stay healthy.

Jonathan Bales just had an article on the size of the receiver vs the speed. In this case, Dallas needs a quick and explosive WR who is strong with elusiveness after the catch or in traffic. Size won't help as much as stealth will.

Cole Beasley did great until they replaced him with Ogletree.
