While Jerry Jones wants more Romo, Garrett wants to give him help with a better running game and line



Jerry Jones says the Cowboys need to find a way to better utilize quarterback Tony Romo and his unique skills.

However, coach Jason Garrett said using Romo to the best of his ability has always been his focus on offense. Garrett said the thing the Cowboys most focus on in the offseason giving Romo help and taking some of the burden off of him.

To that end, Garrett said the Cowboys biggest needs are to be “a better running football and team and being stronger on the offensive line.” He hopes the team can address those issues in the draft and free agency.

“Now the burden on the quarterback in the NFL in 32 cities is significant,” Garrett said. “That comes with the dinner. Now having said that the better you are around him, the more effective he is going to be _ a better running game, multiple targets to throw the football to. All of those things would certainly help the quarterback and alleviate some of the burden.”

I just don't buy any of the Garrett propaganda. His offense is predicated upon the looks of the defense. So despite what he says, running the ball only happens when he absolutely calls one play that has no audible. Garrett chooses not to run the ball and he has had plenty of options for years for more routes and check downs. His offense, which will not change is a set pattern of route adjustments which are really decided by the receivers perception of the defense. Unless there are slants, screens, picks, wheel routes etc, specifically designed (like in a WCO), Dallas will have very recognizable receiver patterns on play after play.

The part I don't buy is that Jason will give up on play calling, grafting in more running or different philosophies, into his system. He almost has too much to lose when the offense succeeds. It means that for the last 6 years Jason has been inefficient and wasting the talent, Super Bowl possibility, and money of the team with his one dimensional offense.

Jerry keeps saying things like this:
"Jason, as head coach, is going to be dealing with some new ideas, some new emphasis in each of these coaches' philosophies and their ideas."

But then Jason will say things like this: "I think you are trying to do that with all your players," Garrett said. "We have a system of offensive football that we believe in. We feel like it’s a flexible system. We feel like if we have these particular guys playing and these are their strengths, we very easy can do what they do best. We can avoid some of these things."

The bottom line is Garrett will not give up on calling the plays and he will not stop using his scheme. He will set up a competition of play callers and not feel comfortable with anyone's result. He will make statements about how well the Dallas Football Cowboys as one of the 32 teams in the NFL has passes the ball against the other NFL teams playing professional football in the NFL.

Garrett should get just as much blame for this mess of an oline as Jerry. I have little faith in red Jesus after watching him do nothing to fix the line in the last draft. I know Jerry calls the shots, but Garrett should have enough clout to use at least one decent pick in each draft on a lineman. I am assuming that he is a better football man than Jerry. I may be wrong. He could be a dumb ass too.
