FRISCO — The NFL made Randy Gregory’s additional 10-game suspension official on Thursday. That means the defensive end will miss at least the first 14 games this season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
The 2015 second-round pick missed four games with a high-ankle sprain last season.
“It’s disappointing he hasn’t played a lot of football for us. There’s no question about that,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Friday. “We’ll continue to try to provide the right structure for him both at the team level and the league level, and hopefully he’ll respond the right way.”
Gregory, 23, spent two months in a rehab facility in Massachusetts. He returned to the team after the season opener, and is working out and attending meetings at The Star. He cannot participate in practice until Dec. 19.
“The biggest thing for him is just to take it day by day, understand the consequences of his behavior and live with those consequences and do everything he can from this point forward to get himself right,” Gregory said. “The league came down with that ruling, and he has to live with that; we have to live with that. It ain’t changing, so you go back to work and you focus on doing what you need to do to get yourself better each and every day.”
Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence returns to the team next week after his four-game suspension ends Sunday. Linebacker Rolando McClain, who isn’t expected ever to play for the Cowboys again, has served three games of his 10-game suspension.
