Roy Williams answered the question Saturday before it was even asked.

Rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant is not paying a price for defying football tradition.

"People are saying it's karma with the whole pads situation," Williams said. "No, it's not that. It happened. It's football. Unfortunately, it happened."

Early in camp, Bryant refused the traditional rookie duty of doing a veteran's bidding and would not carry Williams' shoulder pads off the field after practice. Williams and other veterans, such as inside linebacker Keith Brooking, said they would find other ways to remind Bryant of his rookie status.

On Friday, Bryant incurred a high right ankle sprain that will keep him out four to six weeks. This was not what Williams had in mind.

Williams said he would never wish ill on a teammate. He also said Bryant's absence has no impact on him.

"Nothing about Dez has changed me," Williams said. "Not his draft. Not his presence on the field. It's me. I can't worry about anybody else but me."
