Jerome Henderson's departure not only change to Cowboys' staff

IRVING, Texas -- As the Dallas Cowboys get ready to coach the Senior Bowl this week, they will be without secondary coach Jerome Henderson.
Henderson will join the Atlanta Falcons' staff after interviewing with the team last week, a source confirmed. Henderson’s contract with the Cowboys was set to expire, and he interviewed for the Cleveland Browns' head coaching vacancy as well as the defensive coordinator opening with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Cowboys will be in the market for a secondary coach, according to a source. Joe Baker, who has been the team’s safeties coach since 2012, also has an expiring contract but is expected to return in some role.
Henderson’s departure is the first for the Cowboys’ staff this offseason but it will not be the only change. According to sources, Steve Loney will move to tight ends coach and Marc Colombo will serve as the assistant offensive line coach.
The future of Mike Pope, who has been the tight ends coach the past two seasons, is not clear. Loney worked with the offensive line last year. Colombo was an offensive assistant last season and also worked with the line. He played for the Cowboys from 2005-10.
Defensive ends coach Ben Bloom, defensive staff assistant Turner West and offensive staff assistant Kevin Carberry also have expiring contracts but are expected to be with the team in Mobile, Alabama, to coach the Senior Bowl.
Henderson joined the Cowboys in 2012 to reunite with then-defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. He served as the secondary coach under Monte Kiffin (2013) and Rod Marinelli (2014-15). The Cowboys had the fifth-ranked pass defense in 2015 but the secondary recorded just five interceptions. Starting cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne did not record a pick.
In Henderson’s tenure the Cowboys signed Carr as a free agent to a five-year, $50 million deal, moved up to the sixth pick of the first round to take Claiborne and drafted Byron Jones in the first round in 2015.
