Brent Adjusts To Playing With A Cast

For supplemental pick nose tackle Josh Brent, simply getting back on the field after nearly a week off is a positive. With it comes a new adjustment, though.

Brent, who was being asked to transition from the college game to the NFL level without being in the offseason program, is now learning how to manage trench warfare without much use of his left hand. Brent broke the fourth metacarpal bone on the paw.

Brent has drawn raves from the football staff as well as starting nose tackle Jay Ratliff, but playing without the use of his fingers creates some challenges. The cast is hard as a rock and shaped a bit like a claw.

"There's no collision impact or pain," Brent said. "It makes it tough in a sense of being able to grab and work technique without the appendages. Other than that you just have to get a great punch to stun the O-lineman. It's at an angle so it's almost like my palm is out flat and I'm able to get a punch."

Brent hasn't received a new diagnosis since the original x-ray determined it was broken, so he'll be wearing the cast indefinitely. Given the healing time required and the amount of pounding the hand will take, there's a good chance he wears it all year.
