Will Cowboys give David Irving more time along the defensive line this season?
By David Moore
DAVID IRVING
Position: Backup defensive end/tackle
Size: 6-7, 272
Age when season starts: 23
College: Iowa State
Drafted: Undrafted 2015
Experience: Second season
Contract Status: In final season of a 2-year, $960,000 deal.
Last Season: Irving didn’t sign with the Cowboys until the fourth week of the regular season. He ended the regular season on injured reserve with a wrist injury. But he flashed promise in the 12 games he did play.
The rookie finished with half a sack and 14 quarterback hurries, including four in a game against Philadelphia on Nov. 8. He played well enough for a significant stretch that he made it difficult for Randy Gregory to get snaps upon his return from a high ankle sprain. Irving also blocked a kick.
This season’s outlook: Irving was on the field for roughly one out of every five snaps in games he played last season. He should increase his role in the rotation this season. That percentage should increase dramatically in the first four games when DeMarcus Lawrence and Gregory are serving suspensions.
The Cowboys are intrigued by Irving. They like his upside. It will be interesting to see just how much of a role he seizes in his second season.
