Still think the Dallas Cowboys have too many running backs?
By David Moore

A collection of observations, random thoughts and opinions about the upcoming day at Cowboys training camp:
Remember a few months ago when everyone thought the Cowboys had a glut at running back?

That's no longer the case.

Rookie Ezekiel Elliott is being held out of practice with a sore hamstring, or, as head coach Jason Garrett likes to say, "a soft tissue injury." Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar are currently on the physically unable to perform list.

None of those three will play against the Los Angeles Rams this weekend. Two of them likely won't be ready to open the regular season.

More on that later.

So, who is getting the snaps in practice? Veteran Alfred Morris, sixth-round pick Darius Jackson and Rod Smith. There's no need for Morris to play Saturday, so look for Jackson and Smith to share the workload.

The club is likely to face a difficult decision entering the season. Do they keep McFadden and Dunbar on the PUP list, meaning they miss the first six weeks of the regular season, or activate them on the assumption they won't be out that long? What if one of them is ready to play by Week 3? Do you go a man short on the roster for a few weeks? Can you afford to do that if both backs are ready to go in Week 3?

These are the discussions the Cowboys will be having leading up to the regular-season opener. For the moment, Elliott and Morris are the only locks to be on the opening-day roster. Jackson and Smith could hold down a spot or two until McFadden and Dunbar are ready.

Still think the Cowboys have too many running backs?
