The Cowboys intend to exercise their fifth year option on Travis Frederick before next week's draft is underway, sources said.
The move is procedural and comes as no surprise. Frederick has started every game at center since the Cowboys took him in the first round of the 2013 draft. The option will bind him to the club through the '17 season and give both sides more time to work out an extension.
Frederick signed a four-year, $6.87 million deal with the Cowboys coming out of Wisconsin. He will make a base salary of $1.34 million this season.
The fifth year option is for $8.8 million. The Cowboys can lower that cap hit in '17 and give Frederick more long-term security by reaching a multi-year deal, which is the goal.
The team took the same approach with left tackle Tyron Smith two years ago. The club opted not to use the option on cornerback Morris Claiborne, who recently signed a one-year deal to return this season.
Frederick is a key figure in what many consider to be one of the NFL's best offensive lines. He has started 48 consecutive games to begin his career and been named to the Pro Bowl twice. He has been named second team All-Pro in each of the last two seasons.
The Cowboys have until May 2 to exercise the option, but see no need to wait since the decision has been made. The move could come by the end of this week.
