Dez Bryant took the field Monday dressed in pants and a jersey. He knew he hadn't been cleared to practice. He just wanted to remember how it felt.

"I know I'll be practicing sooner or later," the Cowboys first-round pick said.

When? A return to practice hasn't been set. But Bryant has been ruled out of this week's game with Houston and it's unlikely he'll play against Miami, even though he will lobby to do so if he's made progress.

This fits the timetable that coach Wade Phillips has been told from the start. The rookie receiver should recover from his high ankle sprain in time to play against Washington to open the regular season on Sept. 12.

"I know he wanted to play in these last two preseason games, but he's not a doctor or an athletic trainer," Phillips said.

Bryant ran and cut for the first time Monday since he injured the ankle July 30. He said he felt fine. He also said he has lost 10 pounds working out with athletic trainer Britt Brown and is down to his playing weight of 213.

"Every day it feels a lot better," Bryant said.

That doesn't mean he hasn't wrestled with emotions over not being able to get back on the field sooner.

"I don't want to get into it, but I got into that today," said Bryant, who had a long talk with owner Jerry Jones. "I had to calm myself down.

"Like I said, at the same time, I look at the big picture. That's how I keep myself calm."

Dez is going to be great for us, I haven't been this excited about a receiver since Michael Irvin.

If Bryant realizes his potential,he will be something special,no doubt about it.

His return won't improve the team if the offensive line continues to play like it is.

Just another wasted weapon.
