Cutting Gordon A Head-Scratcher

Every year, when a list of 20 or so roster cuts comes out, there are always a few surprises.
This year is no exception, although nothing was earth-shattering. But still, the move to cut CB Cletis Gordon, really doesn’t make sense to me. I guess, more than anything, the question begs to why he was really here in the first place.
Because if Cletis Gordon wasn’t good enough to make this team here today, then he was never good enough and was never going to make the team. You can’t ask Cletis Gordon to play any better than he did in training camp and the preseason games.
He made about a dozen interceptions in practice and one in the preseason – a play that was probably the highlight of the entire exhibition when he snagged a one-handed pick against the Chargers, his former team.
Now maybe Gordon didn’t play as well last Thursday, but if you listened to Wade Phillips on Friday, he gave guys like Montrae Holland and Alex Barron – a couple of veterans – a free pass with their subpar performance, stating it was difficult for those guys to get up for the preseason finale. Well, why wasn’t Gordon among that group too?
It’d make a little more sense – not much, if they went for the young guys and kept Bryan McCann or Jamar Wall, but both rookies were cut as well.
The Cowboys have just three corners on the roster for now. Either they add one on Sunday when the claim another player, or just roll with three, knowing that guys like Alan Ball and Akwasi Owusu-Ansah could play corner if needed.
Still, if Gordon can’t make the team now, then he probably never had a shot in the first place. And that’s too bad because from my perspective, he did everything he was asked to do, if not more.
Yet another example of the business side of the NFL.
